One of the main reasons people like to jailbreak their iPhones, iPod Touches, and now their iPads, is to add themes to change the look of their device. This adds a more personal touch, and makes it feel more like your own. Winterboard is the app you need to adjust your theme.

When the iPad was first jailbroken, Winterboard’s functionality for iPad just wasn’t there. Although, you could install it, it really didn’t do anything. Today, Saurik, has updated Winterboard, so that you can now apply themes to your iPad.

We should start to see many new themes available for the iPad, as jailbreak developers start to play around with the iPad UI files. Creating themes for the iPad is a bit different, than the iPhone or iPod Touch, as we are now dealing with landscape mode, as well as portrait mode. Basically, we have to create twice as many files for one theme.

The "Spirit" is in the air. Can you feel it?

Tomorrow we will see the iPad 3G shipping out to many customers across North America. After some sketchy shipping estimates, it was skeptical at first, but the iPad 3G is indeed shipping out on April 30th.

Not only will we be receiving the iPad 3G, but we will also be receiving the first 'userland' jailbreak since firmware 1.x. The Jailbreak tool is dubbed "Spirit" and was was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release.

Unfortunately userland jailbreaks are not always the best way to go about releasing Jailbreaking tools as they expose security weaknesses in the device even for non-jailbroken devices. So as per usual, you'll want to make sure your SHSH files have been backed up, so that if Apple closes any security holes, you have the ability downgrade if needed.

And here's the big one for all you 3GS users. This jailbreak will be UNTETHERED! Yup, that's right! Untethered jailbreak will now be officially bestowed upon you.

This jailbreak tool will not include a carrier unlock, which is no surprise, however, the phone will need to be activated or hacktivated for Spirit to work.

So hold on to your hats, April 30th is right around the corner.

Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

First, there’s “Open”.

Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

Apple even creates open standards for the web. For example, Apple began with a small open source project and created WebKit, a complete open-source HTML5 rendering engine that is the heart of the Safari web browser used in all our products. WebKit has been widely adopted. Google uses it for Android’s browser, Palm uses it, Nokia uses it, and RIM (Blackberry) has announced they will use it too. Almost every smartphone web browser other than Microsoft’s uses WebKit. By making its WebKit technology open, Apple has set the standard for mobile web browsers.

Second, there’s the “full web”.

Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access “the full web” because 75% of video on the web is in Flash. What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web’s video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever. Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video.

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Third, there’s reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Fourth, there’s battery life.

To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 – an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies.

Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.

When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Fifth, there’s Touch.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the problem that most Flash websites need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices.

Sixth, the most important reason.

Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices, there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. We have discussed the downsides of using Flash to play video and interactive content from websites, but Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.

Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Conclusions.

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Windows Live Messenger for iPhone Screenshots Revealed

Neowin.net has posted a first look at screenshots of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Live Messenger for the iPhone. The iPhone OS was introduced in mid 2007. It has been almost three years and Windows Live users haven’t had a taste of an official app for the iPhone. Well that has now changed.

According to Neowin.net:

today we can exclusively unveil the first official screenshots of Windows Live Messenger for iPhone. The application will arrive in June alongside the rest of Windows Live Wave 4. According to our sources, Microsoft will unveil the next generation of Windows Live Messenger tomorrow but will not ship bits to public beta until June. A limited private beta is expected to take place in May.
Windows Live Messenger for iPhone will include photo sharing, chat and a social stream for users.

There are free alternatives out there for MSN users. Such examples include Meebo, IM+ Lite, and eBuddy. This news comes a few years too late, but then again this is Microsoft we’re talking about. Should this be filed under, “News we really don’t care about”?

Earlier this month when Twitter bought Atebits, aka Loren Brichter, the maker of the best iPhone Twitter client, Tweetie, they promised that Tweetie wouldn’t die. Instead it was to be turned into Twitter for iPhone. That update now appears to be coming soon.

In the final update to Tweetie 2 (2.1.2) that just went live in the App Store, the “What’s New” notes tell of a “Suprise!” The surprise is that when you pull down your tweet stream to refresh, you’re greeted with a new slot machine graphic. Hold it down long enough and the slot machine starts spinning. If it comes up with the right combo, you get a message that reads, “Coming Soon! Tweetie will be Twitter for iPhone (Look for the next app update)“

So there you go. Meanwhile, the app I’m more concerned about is Tweetie for the iPad. In its blog post, Twitter promised that was coming “eventually.” The last time I talked to Brichter about it (pre-Twitter sale), all he said to me was, “Can’t say just yet, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.” It’d be great to hear something about the new version of Tweetie for Mac too, which Brichter was hard at work on before the acquisition.

It’s worth noting that this Tweetie update also fixes the Foursquare integration.

You can find Tweetie 2 in the App Store here — though I wouldn’t buy it since Twitter has said that Twitter for iPhone will be free.

Apple has let the cat outta the bag, intentionally this time. They have announced the dates for the WWDC10 conference in San Fransisco. The conference will run from June 7th-11th. Which coincidentally is right around the time that Apple traditionally reveals the newest iPhone. (perhaps they spare the theatrics this year and just set it out on a stool in the middle of the stage, no words said, just here it is type of mentality) Anyways, mark your calendars and get the popcorn on order, it will be an interesting week!

Wireless Sync for iPhone or iPod touch

GeoHot New Jailbreak Site Found!?

iH8sn0w, tweeted GeoHot a message about finding a website recently updated under his name. But is this the name and website for the new jailbreak?

Has iH8sn0w taken away from GeoHot's thunder, similar to what Gizmodo did to Apple?

No word yet, but it does seem legit. I first thought that maybe GeoHot went around buying every domain that had ra1n next to it. But that was shot down when I notice that the domain was register on May 27 2010, 2 days after Geo announced his update untethered jailbreak for blackra1n. The last update to the site was on April 13.

Seems like everyone's work is getting leaked a bit early this year.. I wonder if we might see a leak to McDonald's new Burger.

Ok now For part 2 This Jailbreak is Called "thunderst0rm" Well this one looked a little More legit because it was a bigger file. Turns out they just added a bunch of useless .dll files to make a larger file. this it what you see.

and....this is all it really is...

Its just some useless bit of msg box code that does nothing at all to your iDevice.

All these "failbreaks" are just a waste of time and a pain to deal with. I suggest everybody just waits untill the jailbreak is out to the public. Unless its from comex, devteam, or gehot, ih8sn0w, i wouldn't waste my time trying these failbreaks. You just may end up with a ruined Computer or a bricked iDevice.

Hi Blog many of you have heard of the @ new Jailbreaks for 3.1.3. well they are BOTH fake.
heres what Thunderst0rm and Turbo2sn0w really do.
Well lets start of with Turbo2sn0w
Turbo2Sn0w ends up with ASL.dll error and will shutdown / reboot Your PC in 600 seconds(10 mins).

What does it do actually?

It copys a Batch file named iTunes.bat onto the startup folder with the error msg and shutdown command

How to fix this issue?

Remove the batch file named iTunes.bat from the startup folder and make a reboot

Also (thanks to ownerofspam) i would like to add. Turbo2Sn0w also corrupts your iTunes .dll files, I know it corrupts ASL.dll and I think also corefoundation.dll (not sure on this) along with others, but it also makes you reinstall iTunes if you don't have a copy of those .dll files on hand.

Police Investigate Gizmodo iPhone Story

Police are trying to determine if Gizmodo violated California state law by buying an iPhone prototype from someone who said he found it in a bar, according to "a law enforcement official" quoted by CNET yesterday. The official also claims that Apple itself asked for the investigation, which, if true, would contradict persistent rumor that the somewhat unlikely story was just an Apple publicity stunt. An executive at Gizmodo's parent company says that police have not asked them any questions yet.

Reportedly, Apple representatives contacted the Santa Clara County Police, and asked for an investigation of the events surrounding the disappearance of an iPhone prototype last month, and its subsequent appearance and teardown on Gizmodolast week. CNET's Greg Sandoval and Declan McCullagh spoke to a police representative, who says that the investigation may be conducted by a computer crime task force inside the Santa Clara County district attorney's office. While Apple's Cupertino headquarters is in Santa Clara County, the bar where the phone was allegedly lost and found is in Redwood City, the county seat of neighboring San Mateo County. According to California law, any person who finds lost property and "appropriates such property to his own use" is guilty of theft... or, If the value of the property is above $400, grand theft, which is a felony.

The story has garnered a lot of comment since it was revealed on Monday. Gawker Media (the owners of Gizmodo) paid $5,000 for the prototype, which sources have said is considered stolen goods by Apple. There are a number of elements about the story - such as, for example, why the finder claims he took the phone home with him rather than giving it to the manager of the bar - that have prompted questions about whether the phone was really found or stolen. Some observers looked at the holes in the story (a man walks into a bar with a priceless prototype and leaves it on a bar stool? really?) and wondered if the whole thing was an elaborate stunt by Apple to build up pre-release buzz for the next generation iPhone, but the police investigation suggests that they weren't involved. Gawker's chief operating officer says police haven't been in contact with him about the phone.

The Santa Clara County computer crime task force, called the "Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team" (REACT) was established in 1997 and pools the tech talents of a number of local jurisdictions. What's considered "Silicon Valley" lies mostly within the borders of Santa Clara County: the Santa Clara Valley -once the largest fruit producing and packing area on Earth - and the city of San Jose, and so the police have had to deal with a lot of high-profile intellectual property issues as well as thefts. Apple involved REACT in an investigation of one of its employees who sold over $100,000 worth of computers on eBay. REACT has more tech-savvy investigators than many local law enforcement agencies, commonly investigaring cybercrimes likedenial-of-service attacks of online businesses in Silicon Valley.

Sweet news to add to the new iPhone 4/HD that should be out this summer, Google has confirmed in a press Conference in London that they will bring Free Navigation to the iPhone along with other platforms, Pre anyone?

Now the company doesn't know exactly when we can expect these features on the iPhone, but knowing how fast Google works, it shouldn’t be too long.

Leaked photo’s of Dells new Windows 7powered phone makes one ask, will it be a real contender? The photo’s and specification have been posted by Engadget and the new phone from Dell is intriguing. Here are some shots of what it will look like:

Will Dell be able to pull off a coup against rivals such as Apple’s iPhone and the latest Android powered phones? I personally believe that Dell will be fighting an uphill battle. Apple’s iPhone will remain the dominate device that all others will be compared to.

iPhone OS 4 Beta 2 was pushed to developers yesterday and it mainly brought API improvements, increased performance and bug fixes. Apart from this, Apple has also added a new faster and smoother animation for switching between apps during multitasking. This carousel transition rotates apps in a wheel-like form. It’s no secret that Mozilla is planning some major UI overhauls for their next major release of Firefox. The new theme is designed to reflect a modernized web browser to illustrate its “power, simplicity, and customizability.” The design team has outlined 4 main goals for the refresh:

Streamline UI elements and reduce visual footprint
Modernize look and feel
Retain visual integration
Maintain cross-platform consistency (Where applicable)

While the new theme has been revealed progressively, it is still a work in progress and the team is constantly making new adjustments and additions. A new timeline has been posted at the project homepage to see that the new changes get the proper amount of attention for implementation. Stephen Horlander, a Visual Designer with the Firefox team, has posted screenshots of the new concepts that they are working on.

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 2 Now Available for Download

Apple has just released the Beta 2 version of iPhone OS 4 for developers, along with an updated version of SDK for iPhone and iPod touch. Only members enrolled in the iPhone Developer Standard or Enterprise Program can access these bits of iPhone OS 4 and SDK by signing into Apple Developer Connection.

iPhone OS 4 Beta 2 and SDK includes new API improvements, features and bug fixes. Stay tuned, as we will have more on the change log soon.

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled the new iPhone OS 4 firmware in a preview event, held at their 1-Infinite loop campus in Cupertino. This announcement added lots of newfeatures for both users and developers alike.

US universities are banning the iPad

UNIVERSITIES IN THE US are having to ban Steve Jobs' oversized IPod Touch due to problems with their wireless networks.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Ipad has been rejected from the networks of two schools - Princeton University and George Washington University - due to "network stability issues", while Cornell University has been seeingconnectivity problems and bandwidth overload.

The Ipad cannot connect to George Washington University's network at all, as its wireless network's security features won't allow it, while Princeton has had to block 20 per cent of the devices because they were causing problems with the school's entire network.

Cornell IT director Steve Schuster said he was working so that Ipad networking and connectivity issues didn't cause "devastating consequences to our network".

Apple claimed it wasn't familiar with the problems, even though Princeton has reported its issues to the company.

Although this isn't a problem with the device as such, connectivity problems like these need to be ironed out before educational institutions are going to take to it as Apple hopes.

This might be why the international launch has been delayed, because these reports obviously need to be investigated. However it was pretty predictable, as problems always seem to crop up with Apple first-generation devices. Thus it may be sensible to wait.

It has also been suggested that cost issues and the lack of educational content are also holding back Ipad uptake so far in educational institutions.

The Ipad has already run into problems in Israel, with customs officials there confiscating the devices due to its WiFi allegedly being either more or less powerful than Israeli WiFi networks

Design of the Leaked Next-Generation iPhone

The big news this past weekend was the leak of several photos of what appeared to be the next-generation iPhone. The early photos were a bit blurry and elicited a range of responses -- many negative. Opinions seemed to turn somewhat when high-quality images of the next-generation iPhone were revealed by Gizmodo this morning.

If you haven't seen the device in detail yet, check out this nice hands-on video from Gizmodo showing it at all angles.

The unreleased device seems to carry a number of features that have been requested by users in the past, including a front-facing camera, camera flash and higher-resolution screen. But the design of the phone itself seems to be producing the most vocal reactions

A company in Germany, Berlin-based Neofonie, which employees a small army of some 180 people is coming out with their own version of a tablet called the WePad. The company indicated they already are drumming up interest in the new device and have a list of about 20k people who are anxious to place an order. The company states they will begin taking orders on April 27th with a projected release date sometime in July of this year.

So what is going to make the WePad different? According to one article it states that:

The WePad’s basic version, which comes with Wi-Fi and 16-gigabyte storage, is set to cost €449 ($600), the larger 32-gigabyte version with a fast 3G modem is €569.
Two USB ports allow users to connect all kinds of devices with the WePad, from external keyboards to data sticks.
The WePad, with its 11.6-inch (29.5-centimeter) screen, is powered by an Intel chip and relies on a Linux software basis which is compatible with Google’s Android and all Flash applications.

So does it look like an iPad? You decide.

The first thing that popped into my mind was that this company could potentially be setting itself up for a lawsuit using the name WePad. Apple may think that this is to close of a name association to their iPad brand. We have seen this before from Companies that wish to smash the competition. The German based company may be to small to fight litigation in court against a mega billion dollar corporation.

I believe that we will see an avalanche of iPad clones coming this year.

So, the new redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA release has been pushed to all the users who had the first one. Yesterday (April 16th) was an update that fixed an issue various users had who experienced SMS or 3G data failures. The update was pushed quickly after finding out this problem was around.
The redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA has a lot of restrictions from what you might think, sadly.
Below is a list of things that are Req. in order for this to even work at all.
“iPhone 3G only (for now)
Mac OSX only (for now)
the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)”
As you can see above, this is only intended for users that have the 4.0 BETA release of the new Firmware, AKA App developers, who have jailbroken apps/tweaks.
I personally don’t see a reason to release this in conjunction with the BETA firmware, as it only shows Apple, Inc. what’s going on. Which, in turn may cause a patch in the final release that would other wise cause another delay in releasing the Jailbreak with it.

The hacker/dev behind Sn0wbreeze, F0recast and BlackBreeze has just published a new video which shows off an iPod touch 2G, jailbroken on the newly released iPhone OS 4 Beta. He is said to be working on a bundle for iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS, which can be used with PwnageTool to jailbreak the said iPhone and iPod touch on the latest firmware. Video after the jump.

There is no ETA yet on the pwnage bundles, but according to the hacker, they should be out very soon. Stay tuned as we will let you know whenever they are ready for primetime use.

iPhone 4G: is this it?

Is this the iPhone 4g (or iPhone HD)? There's no way to tell for sure, but these photos which made their way into our hands certainly do a convincing job of making us think that's very much the case. Apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

There may be a chance to get some more face-time with the handset, but we wanted to get these photos to you guys ASAP. Stay tuned, we're working on more details as we type -- for now, enjoy the gallery below!

Update: As a number of commenters and tipsters pointed out, this looks almost exactly like a Twitpic posted by TUDream on February 20th, which we're throwing after the break if for whatever reason the source link goes down. It's low-res, shows an indiscriminate bit of the inside, and some mysterious button in the middle of the other side. The mic holes on this pic seems to be larger, too..

iPhone 4G leaked Alumni Case

New photos claiming to be of the back cover for the upcoming iPhone 4G have surfaced online, according to MacRumors.

The site believes the authenticity of the photos is questionable since their meta data indicates that they have passed through Photoshop CS4.

Text on the back of the claimed shell indicate that it is a 64 GB model, and the first line of small text includes Apple's traditional "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China" information. Unfortunately, the images are not of high enough quality to interpret the second line of text, which would contain the model number and FCC and IC ID numbers.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt schmoozed some news about the next business of Apple’s they’re about to get all up in — an Android-based tablet competitor for the iPad. As reported in theNew York Times [via Gizmodo]

Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in “stealth mode” with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

Cue gPad jokes in 3… 2… Interestingly, Apple’s public frenemy number 1 — and occasional Steve Jobs coffee date — revealed right there that it won’t be running Google’s ChromeOS as anticipated, so the cloud-future once again suffers for the local, app-rich present. Given that Apple is closing the functionality gap with iPhone OS 4 (see our complete preview), and Google is closing the usability gap with Android 2.1 and FroYo, its going to a tight race. iPad a head-start, but so did iPhone…

Either way, we can’t wait to see what Apple introduces next February so we can see what Google will compete against next September! (We kid! We love the competition!)

Geohot Jailbreaks 4.0!

Alright, with that out of the way lets have some fun! As you may know 4.0 beta and you need a registered device with someones pricey developers account, right? Well there is a bypass!!

1. Get into the IPSW by simply changing the IPSW to a .zip.

2. Open rootfs.dmg

3. Then go to System/Library/CoreServices and made a copy of SystemVersion.plist to your desktop.

4.Open SystemVersion.plist and find and remove the two lines below:

ReleaseType

Beta

5. Add it back into rootfs file which will overwrite the old version of the file

6. Change it back to a IPSW and voila! You can now restore to the firmware!

Well, it seems that the ingenuity of the technological world knows no bounds. As such, a product is being manufactured for the iPad that will more or less convert it into a NetBook.

While the idea may be ingenius, the practical application is questionable. The “iPad LapDock” is more or less going against everything that Apple has designed. First, it syncs with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard, then, it seats the iPad in portrait mode where the LCD laptop screen would normally be housed. In order to navigate around the iPhone OS, you would still need to use multi-touch features, so this hybrid, while seemingly ‘cool’ at first, is in fact just an aesthetic enhancement, and offers no real points in usability. Keep in mind, this product has not been released as of yet, so this is not a review, it is more of a opinion.

Apple and Google are braking up

The A4 chip and the large display in iPad cost half of the total price. With this we expect iPad mini might not have any mind blowing features! But Apple is said to be making their efforts to cash on ‘portability’ factor thus making iPad mini a better user eBook reader or a web browser. This light version of iPad may risk the survival of iPod touch, but looks like Apple have their own plans.

Apple Revises iPhone's GPS and Navigation Features

Apple said that iPhone OS 4.0 will support navigation apps and turn-by-turn directions even when the app is sent to the background. All applications that use GPS or aGPS will be able to take advantage of the new navigation tools. The apps will be able to track users in real-time. Apple is also boosting the location privacy features of the iPhone. It will allow users to fine-tune which apps have access to their location and which don't through new settings tools in the iPhone's menus. No dashboard for the iPad (well not from The App Store)

Apple decided not to allow Dashboard apps on its iPad App Store in the end, apparently for “contradicting the iPad’s user experience”.

While it’s unfortunate, one of these Dashboard app developers (possibly the most interesting one) has chosen not to let his work go to waste and published the source code of his app on Github (link). This way, those of you with developer accounts should be able to compile and install his app on your iPad despite Apple’s decision. Furthermore, it will also be made available via Cydia as soon as the iPad jailbreak goes public. All of this completely for free.

Why is this one so interesting? Well, it’s actually a port of Mac OS X’s standard dashboard and it lets you directly install some of the available widgets on Apple’s website, neat right?

Geohot has Verbose booted the iPad!

The infamous iPhone hacker George Hotz (aka Geohot) has finally managed to jailbreak the iPad. In a tweet posted today, he showed verbose mode running on his iPad.

For those of you who don’t know what verbose mode is, it is when you boot your iPhone/iPod touch or iPad, you see all the stuff that happens behind the scene, pretty much like booting a Mac OS X with –v argument. The fact that Geohot has managed to boot into verbose mode confirms that the iPad has been hacked, and all we wait now is for the tools to come out so that we can all jailbreak our iPads.

Last week, iPhone Dev-Team published a video where they clearly showed iPad being jailbroken by a software tool dubbed as “Spirit” on iPhone 3.2 firmware for iPad. Yesterday, Geohot also posted keys to decrypt iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad. These keys allows you to decrypt iPad .ipsw files so that you can explore it for exploits.

There is no ETA on release of any of the mentioned tools. They are all expected to be released once iPad 3G are available later this month.

Sources familiar with Apple's plans say the primary reason for banning cross compilers is to support the new sophisticated multi-tasking APIs in iPhone OS 4.0, reports AppleInsider.

The system will now be evaluating apps as they run in order to implement smart multitasking. It can't do this if apps are running within a runtime or are cross compiled with a foreign structure that doesn't behave identically to a native C/C++/Obj-C app.

"[The operating system] can't swap out resources, it can't pause some threads while allowing others to run, it can't selectively notify, etc. Apple needs full access to a properly-compiled app to do the pull off the tricks they are with this new OS," wrote one reader under the name Ktappe.

Some of you in iPhone still rockin’ an older iPhone 3G or 2nd gen iPod Touch may have been a bit put off after the iPhone OS 4.0 preview. Multitasking was definitely the big thing there and unfortunately for the owners of the devices listed above, they won’t ever see a single part of it. Apple will try to rationalize that it is because of lower spec’d internal hardware. But a solid 1 year+ of jailbroken iPhones running Backgrounder just fine calls Apple’s bluff and exposes it for what it is — a sham to get people to upgrade when they don’t have to.

So it’s with a bit of surprise yet utmost glee that I share with you this bit of information: The iPhone 3G and 2nd gen iPod Touch can in fact multitask and do so natively in OS 4.0. This little treat was discovered by a developer who goes by “cdevwill” on Twitter, posted the following:

That’s great news for owners of those legacy devices who are ok with jailbreaking. For now, editing that particular .plist isn’t for your general noob. But give it a time. I’m sure a simple app will pop up in Cydia that will take care of all the under the hood tasks for you. Though an even better solution would be a simple app that could do this even on an un-jailbrokeniPhone/iPod Touch.

It’s definitely an interesting development in the early stages of OS 4.0. Stay tuned…

The newly released iPhone OS 4.0 BETA software, rar'd up the ipsw files, NOT the dmg
so will be able to open on windows.

Shift click the "update" button in iTunes. (Alt click for Mac) to select the ipsw file.

This will ONLY work for the iPhone 3GS. Your UDID needs to be added to a dev account for this to work.

According to this video showing Cydia multitasking and this tweet by a member of the Dev Team, iPhone OS 4.0 has been jailbroken already. Then again, Apple may have left the doors wide open as a pre-launch red herring.

Either way, Apple will surely patch whatever exploit was found before iPhone OS 4.0 launches this summer.

But how could the Dev Team possibly break down the doors of 4.0 so quickly? One reasonable hypothesis: They used an exploit they found when creating an iPhone OS 3.1.3 jailbreak—a jailbreak that has yet to be released

How Does it Work for Users?

Here's one example: If you are working on email and there's a link to a web page, clicking on that link will open Safari. In previous versions, that will close Mail and launch Safari. Once you were done watching that web page, you would close Safari, get back to the main iPhone menu, click on the Mail, and go back to your mail.

In this new version, Mail keeps running—in a dormant state—and Safari opens. To go back to Mail, you just double-click the home button: A dock will slide in from the bottom of the page, showing the running apps. Click on any app to switch to the app.

How Does It Work for Developers?

First of all, this is not 100% true multitasking. That will consume too many resources, specially memory—which will make the system choek—and CPU—which will also deplete battery life quickly.

I find this Program Very useful for Burning Ubuntu disc's or for live CD's Ive used this for about a month or to and ive taken a liking to it.

What's Inside Your iPad

It's been a wild few days for the iPad: Apple sold 300,000 units of the salsa-making, blendable miracle device on its first day in the world. But for those of us who want a slightly more educational--and somewhat less violent--deconstruction of Apple's latest and greatest gizmo, the folks at iFixit and Chipworks have combined their powers to provide a detailed teardown of the iPad's A4 processor. The two used a variety of methods (scanning electron microscopes, acid baths, x-raying, grinding, and extreme force) to take apart the brains of an iPad and show us what makes it tick.

What did iFixit and Chipworks find inside of the iPad? First off, A4 processor powering the iPad has three distinct layers: the microprocessor itself and two layers of Samsung RAM. Layering the RAM on top of the processor allows Apple to buy memory from any vendor, not just Samsung.

The three circles are solder beads. Having the RAM close to the processor makes RAM access faster and thus reduces latency. It also makes your battery last longer by cutting power consumption. How about the GPU? Preliminary software analysis confirms that the iPad is powered by the PowerVR SGX 535 GPU, the same one that drives the iPhone 3GS. As iFixit says, "there's nothing revolutionary here." The iPad's processor is very similar to the one that's in the iPhone, which makes it easier for Apple to cut both power consumption as well as cost when designing and building the iPad. On Thursday, Applewill reveal iPhone 4.0. Can you Jailbreak iPhone 4.0? You may be able to, but that depends on the device you are using and whether or not Apple patches the exploit. A hacker named comex, recently discovered an iPad Jailbreak, but won’t be releasing it until the iPad 3G is out. If the iPad jailbreak is released before iPhone OS 4.0, Apple has enough time to patch the exploit and possibly permanently disable a jailbreak for iPhone 3GS and iPad users. If you have an already jailbroken device (excluding the iPhone3GS or iPod touch 3G) then you will always be able to jailbreak.

Apple loves to play the cat and mouse game, but so far the iPhone hackers have always found an exploit in their firmware that has allowed users to jailbreak. It is likely that users will be able to jailbreak iPhone 4.0 once it’s released. The worst Apple could probably do is make the firmware so secure that users of the newer iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, and iPad will need to re-jailbreak every time they reboot their device (also called tethered jailbreak).

Apple has sent an invitation to the press and invited them to an event they are holding on Thursday, April 8 at 10:00 AM. Websites like Gizmodo, and Engadget were invited to this special event. Apple will be announcing their new iPhone Operating System, iPhone 4.0.

With the iPad launch finished, Apple is ready to reveal their new iPhone OS. iPhone 4.0 will be a major iPhone update, so we can expect Apple to add major features like multi-tasking, flash, themes, and more. I will post updates on iPhone 4.0 on Thursday, so be sure to check back!

iPad Jailbreak!

There are a lot of articles on the web talking about how someone named musclenerd was the first person to jailbreak the iPad.

Let me be clear – the solution musclenerd provided was simply to access the root directory of the iPad 3.2 firmware – not to be able to download 3rd party applications.

The first iPad jailbreak to do that was from Ryan Rohypnal – Follow twitter.com/ryanrohypnol for updates!

The video below shows the iPad start up and access the 3rd party software application Cydia – as anyone in the iPhone hacking world knows, Cydia could not be loaded onto an iPad without it being jailbroken.

Apples new Product

Yesterday i got to get my hands on apple's new Prouduct The iPad.

Personalty Before i got to see what the iPad could do i Took it as a giant FAILURE.

(who wants a Giant iPod Touch?)

But this is a Great Product. Seeing the Things Apple added is really cool. I see they've integrated Some of the things us Jail-breakers call a standard

1. having Backgrounds on the Springboard

2. Being able to rotate your springboard into Landscape Mode (SBrotator)

What i also liked about the iPad is that i could use it for school if need such as, Creating spreadsheets,Slideshows,Word processing. And its compatible with iWork and Microsoft office For all our Windows users.

Another things i liked about the iPad was the resizing of apps Which was kool Playing NBA live on a Huge screen. then i could resize if back to the size of a itouch if needed
